Spilling the beans on coffee cup recyclability.
There is a significant gap between what is "technically" recyclable and what is "actually" recycled in the UK. It’s a common misconception that anything paper-based would belongs in the recycling bin. We want to the record straight so you can make an informed decision when it comes to choosing your Hot Cups.
Are paper coffee cups recyclable in the UK?
The short answer is no. Paper cups, whether they are lined with PE, PLA, or Aqueous, are not accepted by standard roadside or commercial recycling centres in the UK. Under the OPRL assessment system, most paper cups in the UK market currently receive a Red RAM (Recycling Assessment Methodology) rating. In simple terms, UK recycling facilities aren’t able to determine and process the different linings of anything shaped like a Hot Cup so they are all rejected.

Who are OPRL?
Don't just take our word for it! OPRL are the UK’s leading independent experts in the recyclability of packaging. They provide an evidence-based grading (the RAM rating) that helps businesses like decent move past guesswork when it comes to our environmental impact. ![]()
Why Compostable is the best solution right now:
If coffee cups aren't recyclable, what's the solution? At decent, the answer remains composting. Our choice is rooted in supporting a true circular economy. It's about looking at the full picture and valuing the start of life as much as how it ends.
- Lower Footprint: Our PLA and Aqueous linings are plant-based. meaning they rely on significantly fewer fossil fuels and oils during production compared to traditional plastic (PE) linings or “recyclable” alternatives.
- End-of-Life Access: While the UK’s paper recycling stream rejects cups, there is an established network of industrial composting facilities across the UK capable of processing our certified compostable packaging into nutrient-rich soil.
We hope this clears up some of the noise around recyclability and compostability. If you’re ever unsure about a product or just want to chat about the best way to dispose of your packaging, we’re always here to help.
